Heat Pump vs. Furnace in Indiana: Which Should You Install?

Cold-climate heat pumps work in Indiana - but they don't beat a gas furnace in every scenario. Here's the honest, contractor's take after 30 years of installing both.

How does a heat pump work in cold Indiana winters?

A modern inverter heat pump can pull heat from outdoor air down to about 5°F before it loses serious capacity. Indianapolis sees about 10–15 days a year below that mark. That's why we usually recommend a hybrid (dual-fuel) system for central Indiana - the heat pump runs cheap heat in mild weather, the gas furnace takes over in a cold snap.

Which is more efficient - heat pump or gas furnace?

Per BTU delivered, a 96% AFUE gas furnace converts roughly $1.00 of natural gas into $0.96 of heat. A modern heat pump at 35°F delivers roughly $2.50 of heat for every $1.00 of electricity. Below 20°F that ratio drops fast. Hybrid systems use whichever fuel is cheapest per BTU at the current outdoor temp.

What does a heat pump cost vs. a furnace in central Indiana?

A high-efficiency gas furnace replacement typically runs $5,500–$9,000 installed depending on capacity, venting, and condensate work. A cold-climate inverter heat pump system (paired with the existing furnace as backup) runs $11,000–$18,000 installed but eliminates summer AC as a separate purchase.

Will a heat pump lower my electric bill in summer?

Yes - a modern variable-speed heat pump cools more efficiently than a single-stage AC. Most of our customers see a 15–25% summer drop after switching from a 13 SEER builder-grade AC to a 17–20 SEER inverter heat pump.

Are there rebates or tax credits available?

Yes - the federal Inflation Reduction Act offers a 30% tax credit up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pumps, and Indiana utility rebates can add another $500–$1,500. We file the paperwork with you at install.

When does a plain gas furnace still beat a heat pump?

If you've got a 10+ year old furnace that just needs a swap, you're not replacing the AC, and you don't want to upsize the electrical service, a straight high-efficiency gas furnace is the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable option. We'll tell you honestly - we install both.
